Madeline lives in an apartment downstairs from her son and his family. The sons family had a dog that they all loved but had a special bond with Madeline. He was like a buddy to her and would come into her apartment and comfort her and keep her company. I see Madeline every 4-5 weeks and asking about the dog was as common as asking her how she was, or her family. One day she came in for her regular appointment and without really even saying hello or getting into any conversation, she looked into my eyes and as she starting sobbing, told me that the dog died and she can’t talk about it but wanted to let me know because she new I’d ask about him. It was so heartfelt and sad but yet so beautiful to see such emotion over a member of her family. During the haircut we did speak of the dog a little through tears. She was ok with the fact that the dog had a great life and that is was the natural course of things but obvious that he was going to leave a void in her life. It’s been years and they still talk about getting another but the fear of never having a dog as good as that one keeps them from doing so. If I ever bring him up, to this day they only have great memories, and great things to say about him.
Madeline’s best friend.
