So last week my friends and I took a little trip southward. We went to Savannah Georgia. This is the home to “celebrity” cook, Paula Deen. She’s not a schooled chef to my knowledge, but a well trained and experienced cook. She is a friendly and lovable, talented woman and has a restaurant in Savannah that is frequented by many. Obviously we wanted to go there while in Savannah. I bring this up because she is the topic lately in my salon. It turns out, Paula Deen recently told the world that she has type 2 diabetes. She’s known for her crazy usage of butter and sugar, but not so much in moderation, but in large amounts. The funny things is, so many people in the media and on morning news shows are so wrapped up in the fact that she should be setting a better example for people to follow because of her cooking shows, and cookbooks, and restaurant. I think it’s ridiculous to expect someone to conform to what they think is proper when she never touted herself as a “healthy” cook. I generally eat healthy, as do my friends that went with me to her restaurant, but I knew while there I wanted everything I wouldn’t normally eat. I had fried chicken, creamed corn, butter beans, candied sweet potatoes, grits, collards cooked with pork, and of course buttery biscuits and some ho-cakes. Ho-cakes being pretty much pancakes with maple syrup dripping off of them. It was delicious. There was no way I was going to not eat everything Paula had to offer. Oh, and I forgot to mention the peach cobbler and banana pudding for dessert. Yumm.
Luckily in real life, my salon, most clients agree that she should not be punished or chastised for her choice of diet or restaurant practices. She’s a grown woman and can make choices when and what to eat, just as we are. I find it asinine that anyone would discount her for “finally admitting” to having diabetes. It’s no ones business but her own.
Thanks Paula for the hospitality and the delicious food! Be well!
